GP2 Overview
Yas Marina Circuit hosted its first GP2 Asia race weekend on 5-6 February 2010.
The GP2 Asia Series is a form of open-wheel motor racing based on the GP2 series. Designed to make racing affordable for the teams and to create the perfect training ground for life in Formula One, GP2 has made it mandatory for all of the teams to use the same chassis, engine and tyre supplier so that the racing is a reflection of driver ability.
Races generally take place as support races on Formula One race weekends to boost the series' profile, to give drivers experience of the Grand Prix environment, and to take advantage of the infrastructure (marshals, medical facilities and so on) in place for a Formula One event.
In effort to promote motor racing in Asia, each team is encouraged to have at least one driver whose passport does not come from Western Europe or the Americas (North and South).
